Does Instagram notify screenshots?
Almost never. There is exactly one place where it does, and it is not the one people worry about.
The short answer
Screenshot a story, a post, a reel, a profile picture or someone's follower list and nobody is told. The single exception is a disappearing photo or video sent in a direct message — view-once or replay media, and anything in vanish mode. Screenshot or screen-record one of those and the sender sees it.

What notifies and what doesn't
Why
Why the confusion never goes away
Instagram did run a story screenshot notification as a test in 2018, told a slice of users about it, and then removed it. Snapchat has always notified, and the two products look similar enough that the memory transfers. Meanwhile every few months a viral post announces the feature is back. It has not been back. If it ever is, Instagram will say so in the app rather than leaving you to find out.

How to check for yourself
Use a second account you control. Send a view-once photo from it to your main account, screenshot that — you will see the notification appear. Then screenshot one of its stories and watch nothing happen. Two minutes, and you never have to trust an article about it again, this one included.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram notify screenshots of stories in 2026?
No. It briefly tested that in 2018 and removed it. Screenshotting a story today tells the account nothing — though opening the story does put you in their viewer list, which is the part people usually mean.
Does it notify screenshots of posts or reels?
No. Saving, screenshotting and sharing a public post are all silent. The poster sees likes, comments, shares and saves as counts, never who screenshotted.
What about DMs?
An ordinary conversation, no. A disappearing photo or video — view-once, replay, or anything sent in vanish mode — yes: the sender gets a screenshot mark beside it, and screen recording counts as the same thing.
Does screen recording notify?
Only in the same case as a screenshot: disappearing DM media. Recording a story or a reel notifies nobody.
Will they know I viewed their story?
Yes, if you view it while signed in — your name appears in their viewer list for 48 hours. That is the actual privacy question behind most screenshot worries, and it has a different answer from the screenshot one.
Can I see who screenshotted my story?
No. Instagram does not collect it, so nothing can report it to you. Any app claiming to show you that is guessing or lying.
Checked against Instagram's behaviour in September 2026. Meta changes these rules occasionally and rarely announces it loudly — the test above takes two minutes and is worth more than any article's publication date, including this one's.
The real privacy question is who they just followed.
SpyFollr shows any public account's newest follows and alerts you when the list moves. No login, and they are not notified.
